Daniel 10:3-4
At that time I, Daniel, mourned for three weeks. I ate no choice food; no meat or wine touched my lips; and I used no lotions at all until the three weeks were over.

Nine tips to fully prepare for Daniel fast

Richard Foster:

Fasting is not just a hunger strike, it is not a refusal of food, but a feast on God’s word

Tip #1
Clear and specific goals of the fast

It is important to formulate the goals of the fast. There should not be many of them, but they should be clear and specific. Think about the following questions and be sure to write down the goals of the fast.

  • What questions do I have about knowing God?
  • What questions do I have about God’s Word?
  • In what areas of my life do I want to understand God’s will? This may concern a certain choice you are facing or plans for the near future.
  • In what areas of ministry do I need a clear understanding of God’s will? These areas can be ministry tasks, projects in which you are involved.
  • What questions haunt you and you are looking for answers to them?
  • What am I missing in my life? Lack of faith, courage, discipline, finance, love, clarity…
  • Where do I need a breakthrough? Maybe in family relationships, in business, in the multiplication of disciples, leaders, churches, in baptisms, or in understanding some other issues.

Tip # 2
Abstinence from food

You need to determine for yourself how you will humble yourself. What do you want to remove from your diet for 21 days? What will you leave for yourself these days?

  • Perhaps you will only eat vegetables, fruits and various types of grains.
  • Or you will take wheat, dairy, and meat out of your diet.
  • Maybe you only remove everything sweet, bread, fried.

Set a portion limit. Decide how much food you will allow yourself to eat. For example, 2 eggs a day, 6 tablespoons of rice, 1-3 fruits. You may also want to plan for yourself how many meals you will have per day.

It is your decision what you will or will not eat and drink during the fast. You know your health.

It is important to make a written list of “what you can“ and a list of “what you cannot“. This is extremely important so that later you and your flesh do not start bargaining with God over a small portion of ice cream or something else! Make your boundaries clear by writing them down.

Tip # 3
Abstinence other than food

Fasting and humility can be about more than just food and drink.

Think about what else you need to leave that takes your attention away from God and understanding of His will. Perhaps you need to fast from social media, watching movies, concerts, shopping. Make your decisions and write them down.

Tip # 4
Spiritual priorities

Determine for yourself a list of your spiritual priorities for this time. Perhaps you will pray and meditate on God’s Word three times a day. It is good to make lists of prayer needs. Maybe during the fast, you decide to get up earlier than usual and spend 1-2 hours studying the Scriptures.

You will be incredibly blessed if you spend at least one hour a day in praise and worship with your family. So, prayerfully meditate and make a list of your spiritual activities while fasting.

Tip # 5 Involve others

Don’t be afraid to involve your entire family and your children in this fast. Your entire church or all churches in your city can participate in this fast. Stop right now and think about who you want to invite.

Make a specific list.

family: ………………………………….

friends: ………………………………….

disciples: ………………………………….

teams: ………………………………….

churches: ………………………………….

Call and invite these people and help them get prepared for this spiritual journey. You can share with them all the information about the fast and also invite them to join information platforms you use for communication:

Tip #6
Find a prayer partner

The suggested study material encourages you to find a prayer partner for the time of fasting. A prayer partner is a trusted person with whom you can share concerns, ask questions, and be accountable.

Tip #7
Recipes

We suggest preparing simple recipes before the fast and sharing them on our platform.

Tip # 8
Prayer guide for every day

Each day, the guide offers passages of Scripture for study, meditation, prayer of the day, and questions for personal reflection. There is a space to write down your revelations, discoveries, or your own decisions.

Passages from the Bible are logically selected so it is advisable to read them in the order in which they are proposed, despite the fact that some passages from one book alternate with others.

Tip # 9
Abstinence table

Fill out the abstinence table for yourself. Below is an example, you write what you think is necessary in this table. The table consists of four blocks. Fill out this table 5 days before the fast, this will help you be well prepared for the coming time.

Example of abstinence table.
